Lucy Gaston

These are some images of material experiments. I was laser engraving on banana peels - which was very successful, but the attempts of preserving this organic material was more often than not a failure. But a very beautiful and varied collection of failures nonetheless. I have had resin react badly, making my work impossible to physically handle, I had had mould colonise my favourite engravings, I have had paper buckle and warp.

Embracing failure is a huge part of my work, and I still haven't succeeded at preserving my banana peels 'properly' but I get a lot of compliments on my unsuccessful attempts.

I think one of my main experiences of failure is trying to fight the organic progression of things. Sometimes mould is just really lovely (even if terribly stinky).
